My Radio Harrow Journey

Published in the 2019/2020 booklet

I heard about Radio Harrow from a friend at work who used to be a volunteer. I was sceptical at first and in all honesty, the idea of meeting a bunch of people I didn’t know and doing something I’d never done before (let alone in a hospital environment), made me nervous.

Before moving to Harrow in November 2018, I was attending CBT sessions for anxiety – a lot of which centred on self-image and germs/illness. However, after having the idea put in my head by my friend, I looked into volunteering for Radio Harrow more thoroughly.

While it did sound like something I might enjoy, I couldn’t stop the niggling voice in the back of my head that told me all of the potential negatives that might arise. I spoke to my therapist about it and we regarded it as something that might be useful to try in order to help me out of my ever-shrinking comfort zone. I hummed and harred for a few months, trying to postpone the decision, but eventually I applied and a few weeks later was invited to an induction.

The induction itself was pretty casual (although my awkwardness around strangers kicked in a bit), but I made attempts to chat to some of the others. While I didn’t get to speak to many of them much, there was one person I seemed to get on with quite easily. This gave me a small sense of hope that this new venture wouldn’t be as bad as my anxious thoughts had first told me. I became part of the Thursday team about a month later.

The initial few weeks were a bit uncomfortable, but gradually, little by little, I grew to enjoy my Thursday evenings at Radio Harrow. The team has grown and changed so much since I started and it’s becoming more like a little family.  We laugh, chat and compete riotously in weekly on-air quizzes, and in those moments, I’m glad I took the advice of those around me (and myself) and fought back against the anxiety – it reminds me that sometimes just taking one small step out of your comfort zone, really can make a big difference.
